About Representative Johanson

Representative Aaron Ling Johanson is proud to represent House District 31, which includes Moanalua, Red Hill, Foster Village, Aiea, Fort Shafter, Moanalua Gardens, Aliamanu, Lower Pearlridge.  Representative Johanson has strong roots in the district. His family has resided in the area since 1959 when the family moved closer to Pearl Harbor. 

Representative Johanson’s grandfather retired after 30 years of serving as a shipfitter.

Representative Johanson is a testament to the potential of our public school system as a proud alumnus of Moanalua Elementary School, Moanalua Middle School and Moanalua High School, where he graduated Valedictorian. He went on to attend Yale University, graduating cum laude with distinction in his major.

Prior to being elected to the Legislature, Representative Johanson served in a number of leadership positions at both the federal and state level. In Washington, D.C., he was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff of the U.S. Mint at the U.S. Department of the Treasury.  He also managed a portfolio in the White House Office of Presidential Personnel as Director of Schedule C Appointments and Deputy Associate Director, where he was responsible for interviewing and recommending candidates for Presidential Appointments to leadership positions throughout the federal government. Some of those appointments included the U.S. Surgeon General, Administrator of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and Assistant Secretary of Elementary and Secondary Education.

At the state level, Representative Johanson served as Commissioner on the Legislative Federal Stimulus Program Oversight Commission, Deputy Chief of Staff to the Lt. Governor and a Legislative Aide to former Representative Lynn Finnegan.

In addition to his tenure in government, Representative Johanson also has experience in higher education administration. He was a Development Associate for the Yale Development Office, helping to raise funds for the Yale School of Medicine and he also served as a Senior Interviewer and Outside Reader for the Yale Undergraduate Admissions Office and a Research Assistant for Yale’s Vice President of Federal Government Relations.

Elected to the Hawaii State House of Representatives in 2010, Representative Johanson serves as a Majority Whip and Chair of the the Labor & Public Employment committee. He continues to keep active in the community as Director of the Moanalua Gardens Community Association and  Director of the Moanalua Lions Club.
